In a fresh Public Policy Poll of
likely Republican Primary-goers, Mitt Romney continues to expand his lead in
the early primary state, Florida. The poll indicates Romney maintains 41% of
the support of Republican voters, a stark increase from the previous PPP poll
conducted in mid-November in which Romney held a meager 17%. Romney’s closest
competitor, Newt Gingrich held a strong 26% of the vote, down from 47% in PPP’s
November poll. Rick Santorum and Ron Paul held 11% and 10% respectively, a
statistical tie for third place.
Romney continues to grow his
support despite attacks by rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry in a recent
South Carolina debate, citing Romney’s experience at investment firm, Bain
Capital in which Romney is accused of engaging in “vulture capitalism”- a
devious act in which investment firms streamline struggling companies and
pursue solvency in the face of bankruptcy as a result of problematic business
practices.
Romney defended his tenure at Bain,
referencing free-market capitalist principles for which Republicans have
historically supported.
All eyes are now on South Carolina
where experts many speculate that the candidate who ends up winning the
Palmetto State will inevitably go on to win Florida and capture the Republican
nomination. This comes as great news for the Ron Paul campaign, which is experiencing
an incredible surge in recent polls out of South Carolina that now have the
Congressman at 20% by some measures, putting him in strong contention for a
victory in the ever-important southern state.
