Yet another establishment-type
GOP hopeful has, figuratively-speaking, thrown in the towel on a sputtering presidential
campaign that just never seemed to catch on. This time it is Jon Huntsman is
exiting the race. This news should not come as much of a shock, as the Huntsman
campaign never managed to gain much traction in the prior months leading up to
his seemingly inevitable withdrawal from the contest.
However, just
shortly after officially declaring his departure from the GOP political arena,
if not only temporary, Huntsman formally endorsed a once reviled opponent in
Gov. Mitt Romney.
This is not in and
of itself a significant political move by any stretch.
To the untrained
eye, this may seem like a potentially valuable endorsement by a relatively well-respected
former governor. Still, the Huntsman support is unlikely to offer much of a
boost to the Romney campaign as it focuses much of its time and energy in a
predominantly socially conservative state. A state, mind you, in which
Huntsman’s paltry numbers have been largely within the MoE of zero percent.
Therefore, any votes that Romney may receive because of Huntsman’s departure
will ultimately have a relatively marginal effect on Romney’s final numbers in
the Palmetto State.
Fact: Jon
Huntsman’s run for president was insignificant and completely irrelevant.
Fact: Jon
Huntsman’s endorsement of Mitt Romney will offer no substantive boost to
Romney’s support in S.C and beyond.
